Joshua MacFadyen is the ACLC Teaching and Research Team and Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island and is also an Affiliate Global Futures Scholar at Arizona State University.

I just received Joshua’s new book, Time Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the Air in the mail last week and I am finding it fascinating. It goes through the history of PEI using old and new aerial photographs. This book approaches PEI from a multi-generational timeline perspective. For example, it talks about the roads, when they were built and why. It goes through the major long-term trends and changes in our primary industries like farming and fisheries, rural communities and infrastructure, urban development and coastal change. It goes through big population booms and busts, speculative investing in fox farming, the introduction of the trans-Canada highway, the banning of the automobile and so much more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of why PEI is the way it is.

On a personal level I have known Josh for quite a while through his sister Kathleen who is married to John MacPhee, the singer in my band Paper Lions. We used to visit Josh and Colleen and their four kids when we were performing in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario. That time was all about fun, music, family, but this is my first time getting to dive into Joshua’s work as a scholar and apply it to my understanding of PEI and how that might apply to homeowners, REALTORS®, and all residents or visitors to this unique part of the earth.
